- A sagai or ring ceremony is the public engagement. It can come months before the wedding or be folded into the wedding week.
- There's no fixed gap between engagement and wedding; auspicious dates (muhurat), venues and planning time decide it.
- Budgets grow: 53% of WeddingWire India couples raised theirs at least once in 2023.
- An engagement is a social promise, not a marriage, and dowry is illegal whether it's asked for at the engagement or any time after.

What is a roka ceremony?
A roka, from the Hindi for “to stop”, marks the point where both families agree to the match and stop considering other proposals. It's usually small: close family, prayers, a tilak, an exchange of gifts such as clothes, sweets, dry fruit and sometimes jewellery, and a meal. For many families it's the first formal meeting between the two sides.
Names, rituals and order differ by region and community. In some families the roka and the engagement are the same event; in others they're months apart.
What is the difference between roka and sagai?
A sagai, also called mangni or the ring ceremony, is the formal engagement. It's usually larger and more public than a roka: the couple exchange rings, the families exchange gifts, and relatives and friends are invited. Some families hold it soon after the roka; others hold it a few days before the wedding, as part of the wedding week.
| Topic | Roka | Sagai |
|---|---|---|
| What it marks | The families agree to the match | The formal, public engagement |
| Who attends | Close family | Family and friends |
| Rings | Not usually | Usually exchanged |
| Size | Small, often at home | Larger, often at a venue |
| When | First | After the roka, or within the wedding week |
How long is the gap between engagement and wedding?
There's no fixed rule. Some couples marry within weeks of a roka; others wait a year or more. The usual deciding factors are an auspicious date (muhurat), venues in peak wedding season, exams or work, and how long the families need to plan and save.
In the busiest months demand is enormous: India holds an estimated 8 to 10 million weddings a year, more than any other country, according to the brokerage Jefferies.
How much does an Indian wedding cost?
It depends on who's counted. WeddingWire India, a planning platform, found its couples spent an average of ₹28 lakh in 2023, up from ₹25 lakh in 2022, with an average guest list of 326, and 53% had to raise their budget at least once. Jefferies puts the average across India at about ₹12 lakh, more than three times the average annual household income of ₹4 lakh. The gap is about who's surveyed: platform users skew urban and better off. More wedding numbers here.
Is an engagement legally binding in India, and is dowry legal?
An engagement is a social promise, not a marriage. The marriage is made legally at the wedding itself, under the personal law that applies to the couple, and can be registered afterwards.
Dowry is illegal at every stage. The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 covers property or valuables given or agreed to be given in connection with a marriage, at or before or any time after it, so demands made at a roka or sagai count too. This is general information, not legal advice.
